VAPERS VOICES
Many adult South Africans have used vaping as a method to help them quit smoking and practice tobacco harm reduction.
Since the very beginning, VSML has invited people to share their experiences and what this innovation means to them.
Their stories should not be ignored.

I started smoking combustible cigarettes at a young age in high school as this was considered the “cool thing” to do, but used to only smoke casually with friends. Before I knew it, I was hooked on nicotine and spending an ever growing amount of money on cigarettes. I had struggled with asthma from a very young age and smoking only worsened the symptoms, but alas being addicted to nicotine I continued smoking as quitting proved to be incredibly difficult. In 2019 I was introduced to vaping by a friend who had great success in quitting smoking by using a vape with 6mg/ml liquid. This same friend went from being a pack-a-day smoker to quitting cigarettes completely in a span of 3 months so on their recommendation I went out and bought my first vape. Within 4 months I had completely stopped smoking cigarettes and was now a vaper. From that time up until now I have dropped my nicotine intake drastically, now only vaping 2-3mg e-liquids and as an added bonus haven’t suffered from asthma symptoms in almost 3 years aside from the occasional shortness of breath, but I would chalk that up more to being unfit and having allergies than to vaping as I have had days of chain-vaping without so much as a slight flare-up! Vaping has changed my life by not only bettering my overall health, but also saved me money at the same time.

I only stopped smoking due to the tobacco ban. I thought he Tobacco companies did not fight strongly enough for their customers / consumers. Then to top it off they decided to punish their customers / consumers with massive price hikes to make up their losses. Pretty sure most of them were involved in the illegal sales of tobacco products anyway no matter how they will deny it. We are all going to die one way or the other. Vaping is now just another way of enjoying myself. In my opinion the Tobacco industry “sc…ed” me and now I will never support them. I don’t conform to what you want me to say. I say what I feel. My Avatar is representing what the Cigarette industry did for us.

I decided in January 2017 to quit smoking once and for all after having smoked since 1983 (I was 11 years old when I had my first cigarette). I tried quitting cold turkey but managed 10 days only. Throughout the year I kept trying but always seemed to fall back after 10 days or so. I then changed tactics and started cutting down my daily total. From 25 a day I got as far as a low of 18 a day. I then tried only taking 15 cigarettes to work but by early afternoon I was asking colleagues for a cigarette or 3. In August 2018 I bought a vape and decided that this was going to be my last attempt at quitting. Within the first week I had reduced my cigarette usage down to 12 a day and by the end of September I was on 5 a day. I realized that the vape was doing what it was supposed to do. By the 2nd week of October I had left the cigarettes completely. I have not touched cigarettes since then. I buy my vaping liquid (500ml) and 2 or 3 of my favourite flavour concentrates once every 3 months. My total spend every 3 months is less than R500, whereas I was spending R2700 a MONTH on cigarettes. So not only has vaping saved me a lot of money but I feel healthier now and don’t wake up with a heavy chest anymore. I can afford to buy healthier food now as well, so it’s a win win for me.

The morning of my kidney transplant,i had my last cigrette in the hospital gardens. I thought to myself i can never smoke again,my cousin had decided to give his kidney to me. I could not ever repay him for his unselfish act but i could vow never to smoke again. I have not touched a cigarette again but that was only possible with the help of my vape. If it had not been for vaping and all the vape shop owners i have met over the years,i think i probally would have started smoking again. I loved cigarettes but i think i love vaping more !!!
